Search engine marketing is a form of advertising where you can bid on key phrases that relate to your business so you show up at the top of search result pages (SERPs). It’s also called PPC or pay per click, and paid ads.

While SEO takes time, paying for search ads is almost instant. We can build awareness for your business by targeting key phrases related to your business that people are using when they are ready to buy or actively searching for a product and service like yours.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is sem?

SEM stands for Search Engine Marketing, it’s when you pay for ads on search engines to get your brand, product, or service in front of potential customers. Around 93% of online experiences start with a search engine. It’s a great way to bring awareness to those that are searching for a business like yours.

do I NEED to invest in SEm?

No single business NEEDS to use SEM to attract customers, but it’s a great way to quickly increase your sales, or awareness of your business. Not every single business will benefit from SEM either. If you have a business that doesn’t see much search traffic SEM might not be the best option.

For example, if you have a t-shirt business with a wide range of t-shirt types you’ll likely have better luck buying ads on social media to get people interested and aware. But if you have a t-shirt business that sells a specific type of eco-friendly yoga shirts, there’s a good chance your buyers are searching for a specific product like that.

how do I know if SEM will work for my business?

You can search for what you’re selling online, or search for a competitor brand. If you see ads there’s a good chance you can capture some of that traffic. It’s important to use generic or general terms when searching. If you search for your brand name and you’re not running ads, good chance no ads are going to show.

what is an SEM consultant?

An SEM consultant is someone that can get you set up and running faster than if you were to do it yourself. They can also save you loads of ad spend by properly assessing your business, doing keyword research, and writing good ads.

do I have to spend a minimum amount on ads?

I do suggest having a budget to test ads. It could be as low as $100 a month or in the tens of thousands of dollars. In order to build up a good ad account, there needs to be a decent ad spend. So an account that has a $100/mo budget won’t see results as quickly as an account that spends $3000/mo.

A big error I see with those who try and run their own ads is having a low budget and expecting big results. At the very least you should be getting 100 impressions on a non-competitive keyphrase before making any decision. This should be tied to a good tracking system with clear goals. Some key phrases are for brand awareness and visits, and some are for sales.

can I do my own SEM?

You sure can. I suggest starting with Google as they have a decent onboarding set up for new customers. It lacks a ton of data, but when you’re ready you can jump into the deep end. But keep in mind that if you don’t see the results you expected you should consider rethinking your results, not that the ads didn’t work.
